What is mindful movement?
Mindful movement is any type of movement done with awareness. As you slowly lift up your arm, focus on lifting that arm and pay attention to what it feels like. Now slowly tilt your head to the right. What does it feel like? Is your neck tight? Is your head heavy? Are you aware of the heaviness of your head? I am super aware of how heavy my head is and want to have a detachable head so I can put it on the desk to rest my neck once in a while!
In all seriousness, mindfulness in movement feeds your nervous system. When we are running around tending to our daily things, we do not notice anything about our body, unless our body sends us strong messages of hurt. Ouch.
Why pay attention? The awareness of the body allows for the connection between mind and body and creates more balance in our system. When the system is in balance it functions better. You have more emotional regulation. And who doesn’t want that?
Taking a few minutes each day to notice the sensations in your body, as you are moving about, can be a helpful easy way to a greater well-being. But of course, it is not enough to just read about it. These things must be practiced to reap the benefits. Wishing you well!
